This Tree is not available for Sale at this time through Bower & Branch. Bower & Branch provides this information for reference only. Please check back with us or contact us for more detail.
It is usually the case that people with shady gardens envy those with sunny sites because of all the cool plants that need sun in order to thrive. The tables are turned with Hostas. Gardeners with sunny spaces only wish they could plant these magnificent, shade-loving Spirits. August Moon is one surprisingly sun-tolerant Hosta that will please everyone. The heart-shaped leaves emerge a lime-green color in spring but turn gold in summer, achieving their brightest color when receiving a half-day of good, bright light. August Moon makes an excellent single focal point; a mass planting is stunning.

The Story
Hostas are native to Japan, China, and Korea, but they have many passionate fans around the world. Over the years, plant breeders (along with some home gardeners) have introduced new Hosta selections whenever they’ve found a plant with unique traits. As a result, there are now thousands of varieties to pick from! August Moon is attributed to a trio of plantsmen, Richard Langfelder, Alex Summers, and Peter Ruh. Langfelder originally discovered it in his New York garden in 1964, although the plant wasn’t officially registered with the American Hosta Society (founded by Alex Summers in 1968) until 1996.
The Details
Many newer golden Hostas have appeared on the market since August Moon was introduced in the 1960s, but August Moon remains a favorite. Gardeners love its vigorous growth rate, its sturdy constitution, and its superior sun tolerance.
How to Grow
August Moon is best with morning sun and afternoon shade, but it is quite adaptable. Regular water is a must. Slugs may be problematic with Hostas, but they can be controlled with repeated applications of an iron phosphate product like Sluggo®, which is safe to use around pets. In deer-prone areas, treat with Plantskydd® to prevent grazing. Foliage will die back with the first frosts and can be cut back then. If you wish to dig and divide August Moon, you can do it at any time, but late winter/early spring is best.
