The Story
Branford Beauty Fern is the result of a happy marriage between two fine species. The Japanese Painted Fern hails from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and northern China and is beloved in gardens around the world. A handsome spreader, it covers the ground with flashy green, silver, and burgundy-flushed foliage. The Lady Fern graces northern forests in North America, Europe, and Asia with its lacy, green, upright-arching fronds. Branford Beauty is a chance hybrid of these two sensational Ferns. It first appeared in the garden of a physician named Nick Nickou of Branford, Connecticut.
The Details
Who needs flowers? Great garden designers rely on foliage over flowers to supply long-lasting color and texture to the landscape. With its frosty green fronds, Branford Beauty Fern makes a fabulous show throughout the growing season.
How to Grow
Although Branford Beauty Fern is one tough Spirit, treating it well will reap rewards. This means giving it a premium spot in the landscape where it will receive gentle morning sun or dappled sunlight throughout the day. It needs shade when the sun is hottest. This Fern also appreciates rich, organic soil that holds some moisture but drains well and doesn’t stay soggy after a rain. Regular irrigation is important for lush growth, especially if plants are competing with tree roots for water. It will spread slowly like a groundcover when happy. Branford Beauty Fern goes completely dormant in winter, coming to life again in mid-spring.
