Bring sunshine to shady spaces! Evercolor® Everillo Weeping Sedge is a radiant Fringe that positively glows. New leaves emerge a lime-green color, eventually turning a clear golden yellow, like pure sunlight. A handsome habit adds even more eye-appeal. The slim blades arch gracefully from the center to form a tidy mound. Everillo loves a shady site and will make a satisfying colorspot in the north- or east-facing borders around your home. For even more drama, plant it en masse and create a dazzling river of gold.

The Story

Sedges grow all over the world; nearly 1,000 different species can be found, each offering unique growth habits, colors, and other qualities. Many, if not most, are native to moist regions, but the Weeping Sedge is found in dry, rocky hills and forests on Japan’s main island, and it possesses considerable drought tolerance. The species was first described in 1914 and is typically solid green. This all-yellow selection originated at an Irish nursery as a chance mutation of the popular Evergold Weeping Sedge, a gold and green variety. Evercolor® Everillo was introduced to the public in 2009.

The Details

Evercolor® Everillo Weeping Sedge is sensational in a container. Where winters aren’t too brutal, it can bring brightness and cheer to a container planting even in the depths of winter. Plant it with other hardy evergreens in a pretty pot and keep it by your door to welcome guests and to give yourself a winter pick-me-up every time you come or go.

How to Grow

Native to Japan, Evercolor® Everillo Weeping Sedge prefers a climate that is neither extremely hot nor extremely cold, but it is otherwise unfussy and easy to grow. Plant it in part shade for best results. You will need to water regularly during the first summer, but after the plant is established, it will be fairly drought tolerant. In cool-summer climates, Everillo Sedge may be grown in full sun, but it will require more frequent watering there. To spruce up plants in late winter, trim out any dead or damaged leaves. If the whole plant looks rough, cut it down before new growth emerges, and it will refresh itself.
