Make your home look like it belongs on the cover of a magazine! Rustica Rubra Saucer Magnolia gives your landscape a romantic feel. In spring, its plump, Pussy Willow-like buds burst open to reveal big, blousy blossoms that are rosy pink on the outside and white within -- the result is a captivating two-tone effect. This heirloom Tree becomes a majestic specimen with a graceful, rounded, open architecture. It will reach about 25 feet tall and wide under optimum conditions. The Story

The Saucer Magnolia's story begins in France, at the garden of Étienne Soulange-Bodin, a soldier in Napoleon's army. Soulange-Bodin's true passion wasn't making war, but growing beautiful plants, and after his army service was completed, he devoted his life to horticulture. In the early 1800s, he had the genius idea to hybridize two different species of Magnolias from China in order to combine their best attributes. His brand-new baby Saucer Magnolia first flowered in 1826, and it quickly became a worldwide sensation. Rustica Rubra is a classic variety of Saucer Magnolia that was developed in the Netherlands in the late 1800s.

The Details

Rustica Rubra Saucer Magnolia flowers give off a gentle perfume, making the delightful display even sweeter. Plant it near an entrance or a walkway, so that passersby will appreciate the fragrance. A bench placed beneath its branches would also be a nice touch.

How to Grow

Give your Rustica Rubra Saucer Magnolia a sunny spot in a well-drained site, and it will be happy. A rich, organic, slightly acid soil will result in the best growth. Like most Magnolia Trees, Rustica Rubra dislikes both very wet and very dry conditions, so plant it a couple of inches above grade to improve drainage, and supply it with regular water, especially during the first year or two of establishment. A generous layer of mulch will help in regulating soil moisture levels as well as evening out root zone temperatures. Rustica Rubra requires little pruning.
