Sekkan Sugi Japanese Cedar
This Tree is not available for Sale at this time through Bower & Branch. Bower & Branch provides this information for reference only. Please check back with us or contact us for more detail.
As if she were just back from the hairdresser, Sekkan Sugi Japanese Cedar has striking blonde highlights that will turn heads. This uncommon specimen conifer stands out from the crowd with its light-yellow-tipped foliage and fine, feathery texture. Standing tall and columnar, it will bring structure as well as color to the landscape beds around your home, and the dense foliage also serves as an effective privacy screen when one or more trees are strategically sited. Sekkan Sugi steps out of the spotlight in winter when its needles turn bronze, but it is an evergreen, and the structure and privacy it affords continues all year.

The Story
Like many trees called “Cedars,” such as “Red Cedar” and “White Cedar,” Japanese Cedar isn’t a true Cedar. The Giant Sequoias of California are closer kin. Given these ancient, towering relatives, it’s not surprising that Japanese Cedars are the biggest and oldest trees in all of Japan. They can live to the ripe old age of 1,800 years! There’s no telling how long the golden form ‘Sekkan’ has been grown in its homeland, but it made its way to the States in 1970 via Hillside Nursery in Pennsylvania.
The Details
Looking for something to brighten up your landscape? Look no further; this new variety of Japanese Cedar is just what you are looking for! This vigorous growing evergreen has a pyramidal shape, and the best part is it's sensational bright yellow new growth. Sure to be an attention-getter!
How to Grow
Sekkan does what you probably wish all trees did: it grows quickly in youth, but slows after several years. Meaning, it makes an impressive specimen in no time, but it doesn’t keep that pace and become a beast that overwhelms the space allotted to it. This tree dislikes wet soil and shade, but is otherwise unfussy, low maintenance, and pest-free. The branches are prickly, so it’s a good thing that it rarely needs pruning. The foliage naturally turns a dull bronzy gold in winter. It will brighten up again in spring.
