Like that perfect Little Black Dress, Black Pearl™ Redbud is a head-turning new Tree that carries itself with sophistication and style. Deep Purple leaves -- so dark they seem almost black -- shimmer in the summer sunshine, holding their color better than other selections. The decadent dark foliage complements everything in the garden, from flowers in pastel shades as well as in bright colors to leaves painted silver, gold, and every shade of green. Everybody wants to be seen with this fashionable friend! Let Black Pearl™ greet your guests by the front door, or invite it into your outdoor entertaining area. It will be the life of the party!
Redbuds are red-hot! This classic American Tree has been reinvented into all sorts of intriguing colors and forms in recent years, and people can't get enough of them! Black Pearl™ is a fine new addition to the collection that is especially valued for durable foliage that doesn't fade in hot sun like that of the former red-leaved standard, 'Forest Pansy'. Black Pearl™ Redbud was developed by Ray and Cindy Jackson of Belvidere, Tennessee. To product it, they used a rather surprising combination of plants. They crossed the dark purple 'Ruby Falls' Redbud with the luminescent yellow 'Rising Sun'. Black Pearl™ cane out in 2016.
Black Pearl™ Redbud or Forest Pansy? That is the question. These two similar purple-leaved Trees are often compared to each other, but there are distinctions. The biggest difference is that Black Pearl's leaves hold on to their sultry purple color better throughout the growing season. Black Pearl™ is also more compact than Forest Pansy.
How to Grow
To bring out the most vibrant color in this Tree's namesake foliage, give it a site in full sun. As for water needs,Black Pearl™ will have some degree of drought tolerance once established, but the leaves will stay healthier-looking if your Tree is irrigated during dry spells and not made to fend for itself. It will not abide 'wet feet', however. Growth is moderate and pruning is seldom necessary, though this Tree responds well to pruning should you choose to shape it or give it a little nip and tuck.
