This type of Juniper was introduced in 1949 by a developing horticultural team at Pine Grove Nurseries in Pennsylvania. It was carefully preserved and named “Blue Arrow,” which is fitting to its silvery look. Juniper berries are the source of flavoring gin, and its foliage and wood contain rich volatile oils that these plants resistant to decay and nearly drought-proof!
You may want to keep Blue Arrow Juniper trimmed as a neat, formal accent by pruning it annually. Just clean up the new growth each summer. However, if you do no trimming, you’ll allow more of the pretty blue berries to form. The berries make a nice show from fall into winter, or until the birds carry them all off.
How to Grow
Blue Arrow Juniper is easy to please, provided it receives lots of sun and it’s planted in soil that drains well. As with any tree, regular irrigation is necessary during the establishment period; we recommend the Bower & Branch Elements™ Watering System to supply the right amount. After it has put down roots, it will be quite drought tolerant. Feed with Bower & Branch Elements™ Fertilizer for optimum growth. Prune in summer if desired. Mountbatten is generally trouble-free.
